WDS: NSF/ANSI Standard 61.
NSF Announces New Requirements for Lead to Further Protect Public Health

Changes to the evaluation criteria for lead extraction testing in the NSF/ANSI Standard 61: Drinking Water System Components-Health Effects have been adopted by the NSF Drinking Water Additives Joint Committee. These changes include a reduction in the standard's total allowable concentration (TAC) of lead from 15 ug/L to 5 ug/L.

Other changes to the lead evaluation criteria in the standard include:

  • More than a 50% reduction of the Q Statistic from 11 to 5 for all end-point devices, other than supply stops, flexible plumbing connectors and miscellaneous components.
  • More than a 75% reduction of the Q Statistic from 11 to 3 for supply stops, flexible plumbing connectors and miscellaneous components.
  • A three-fold reduction of the single product allowable concentration (SPAC) for lead from 1.5 ug/L to 0.5 ug/L.
The standard has an implementation date of July 1, 2012, which was established to allow industry sufficient time to design and produce products from alternate materials to comply with both the revised NSF standard and other physical performance standards. Updates to the standard are contained in Annex F and available at www.nsf.org/info/standard61-FAQ.

FE:  Non food Comps Registration Program.

Nonfood compounds and proprietary substances are products used in the processing and pre-processing stages of food production. NSF International launched its voluntary Nonfood Compounds and Proprietary Substances Registration Program in 1999 to re-introduce the previous authorization program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The NSF Nonfood Compounds Registration Guidelines are based on former USDA requirements including:

  • Formulation review against the US Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 21, 9 and 40
  • Label review and confirmation of appropriate use instructions
  • Verification of intended use classifications and category code

Products complying with the Registration Guidelines are issued a registration letter and carry the NSF Registration Mark on their product label and literature. For the convenience of regulatory inspectors and users, registered products are listed online in the NSF White Book™ at www.nsfwhitebook.org.

Lubricants manufacturers may also be interested to know about NSF's new Certification Program dedicated to ISO 21469 that specifies the hygiene requirements for the formulation, manufacture, use and handling of lubricants which may come into contact with food. More information about this new program and other developments within NSF International can be found in our next issue.

For further info about Nonfood Comps Registration Program, go to the specific section of NSF web site.

NSF will be present at

Host 2007, 19-23 October, Fiera Milano (Rho), Hall1, stand A-01

Give your sales team a new marketing tool: explain to them what the NSF mark means!
During Host, the NSF staff will be pleased to talk with your sales representatives and inform them about the additional characteristics that your products have gained through certification. This “sales coaching” will make them better understand what's behind the NSF mark, make them aware of the added value of the products that they are selling and give them competitive marketing arguments.

Assofoodtec seminar during HOST
Furthermore on Monday 22nd October, NSF will give a presentation about sanitation certification at the seminar organized by Assofoodtec, the Italian Association of Manufacturers of Machines and Equipment used to Produce, Process and Preserve Food Products. The seminar will take place at 3pm, at Spazio Gamma, Pad. 9, balconata.

If you want to attend, please fill in the attached form.
